2nd Grade
Teachers
Teacher: Megan Liebe
Paraeducator: Tess Pulido
Second grade is a much anticipated year at St. Joseph Catholic School. It is the year that the children receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. There is a great deal of time and effort that goes into preparation for these special sacraments. Our Catholic faith is the center of our learning, and the teachings of the church and the importance of the sacraments are woven through every subject. Academically, second graders work on increasing their stamina and independence in reading and writing. Math becomes more challenging as students are expected to fluently know their math facts within 20. Students will also engage in hands-on projects and conduct experiments in science and social studies.
About Mrs. Liebe
My name is Mrs. Megan Liebe and I have been teaching second grade at St. Joseph Catholic School since 2019. Before joining the St. Joseph community, I taught Kindergarten in the Kennewick School District. I am graduate from Washington State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Hearing Sciences and later completed her Master’s in Teaching at Whitworth University.
My connection to St. Joseph Catholic School goes beyond my role as a teacher, as our family also chosen St. Joseph for her own children because of its strong sense of faith, family, and community. I am passionate about creating a nurturing environment where students grow academically and spiritually every day.
During the year, 2nd grade students will focus on the following:
Religious Education: Comprehensive Sacrament preparation, including weekly Mass attendance.
Reading & Phonics: Utilizing the Wit and Wisdom reading curriculum for authentic text exploration, supplemented by the Heggerty phonics program and UFLI for foundational skills.
Mathematics: Employing new strategies for addition and subtraction through the Reveal Math program.
Science: Hands-on exploration of the plant growth, land/water mapping, and changes of state/matter using the Smithsonian Institution Science Kit program.
Social Studies: Building understanding of community, citizenship, and essential map skills.
Assessment: Ongoing formal and informal assessments across all subjects to monitor student growth and progress.
Annual Second Grade Book Tasting
Every year, our second graders enjoy a special “Book Tasting” event that turns the classroom into a cozy literary café! Students become “book diners” for the day, sampling a variety of genres—from mystery and adventure to poetry and nonfiction—at different themed tables. This creative experience helps young readers discover new favorites while building excitement for reading. It’s a fun, hands-on way to encourage a lifelong love of books!
